La diáspora jesuita en Italia : movilizaciones emancipadoras y reflexiones patrióticas a finales del siglo XVIII

Nicolas de Ribas

Abstract

Numerous works of enlightened Jesuits from Latin America testify of an interest for the question of Independence. To think of the subcontinent and to write it establish a mirador grace in which the Jesuits analyze the weaknesses, the dreams, the faults, the events, and the happiness to come from the people of the New World. The total exile, far from the native country, far from the family, at an infinite distance of America, implies a hardship of the political rights for monks considered dangerous for the city and its political system. This situation engenders a concern of intellectual innovation and feeds a vindictive patriotism becoming confused with the militant jesuitism of the exiles. The writing is then going to oscillate between demonstration of a universal reconquest of human rights, and expression of strictly national concerns.
