The notion of actualisation in the zero article / absence of article dichotomy in English
The article actualises the noun : in discourse, incidence to the article allows the substantive to realise its potential by making it incident to its referent in the extralinguistic world. In English, where nouns frequently appear without a marked determiner, this notion is essential in recognising, on the one hand, a zero article which corresponds to an unmarked actualisation of the noun and, on the other hand, the absence of any operation of determination.
